Although the job market facing 2010 graduates looks bleak, the news is not all bad!

It is your luck to be a graduating senior in the worst job market in four decades. You worked hard to get into college. You worked hard to survive and succeed in college. And now when you are about to enter the world of work, there is no work. Yes, this is a lousy job market. According to Dr. Philip Gardner, director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University, only 27 percent of the 2,500 major employers he surveyed said they have definite plans to hire students from the class of 2010.

While this is not good news, it is not all bad news either. Gardner says opportunities are emerging. That’s good, and as Richard Nelson Bolles writes in “The Job-Hunters Survival Guide,” “There are always jobs out there!” In fact, there are nearly 80,000 jobs out there for the class of 2010, according to the projections of the employers who responded to our Top 100 Employers Survey. But still, your job search is no piece of cake. As Gardner says, there will be lots of competition for the available jobs. So, you have to take this lemon of a job market that you have been given, and make yourself some lemonade.

So, you ask, “How do you do this?” and I say, “By hard work.” Something that you should be accustomed to, or you soon will because you are about to undertake the most important job of your life thus far – the job search.
